Persian · noun · Iqbal's Emblems
Nasheman / Aashiyana
नशेमन / आशियाना
said na-she-MAN / aa-shi-YAA-na
also written: aashiyana, ashiyana
Meaning
Nest; a bird's dwelling, and by extension a home or refuge.
How Iqbal uses it
Comfort's trap. Your nest does not belong on the dome of a palace — you are a falcon, so dwell on the rock. And the loss of one nest is no cause for grief when limitless skies of flight and lament remain.

Nasheman / Aashiyana in Iqbal’s couplets
Nahin tera nasheman qasr-e-sultani ke gumbad par
Tu shaheen hai, basera kar paharon ki chattanon mein
Tu shaheen hai, basera kar paharon ki chattanon mein
Your nest is not on the dome of a royal palace. You are a falcon — make your dwelling on the rocks of the mountains.

Agar kho gaya ek nasheman to kya gham
Maqamat-e-aah-o-faghan aur bhi hain
Maqamat-e-aah-o-faghan aur bhi hain
If one nest has been lost — what is there to grieve? There are other stations of sighing and lament still ahead.
Adversity · Hope · Restlessness
Khudi ka nasheman tere dil mein hai
Falak jis tarah aankh ke til mein hai
Falak jis tarah aankh ke til mein hai
The nest of your selfhood is inside your own heart — the way the whole sky lives inside the pupil of an eye.
Selfhood · Self-Knowledge
Parindon ki duniya ka darvesh hoon main
Ki shaheen banata nahin aashiyana
Ki shaheen banata nahin aashiyana
I am the dervish of the world of birds — for the falcon never builds itself a nest.
