Sama — the Sufi practice of "listening," the audition of music and devotional poetry to kindle ecstasy and remembrance of God, central to many orders. Iqbal, himself a poet whose verse stirs the spirit, appreciates the power of such inspired listening to move the heart, while keeping his characteristic guard against ecstasy that ends in passive rapture rather than issuing in awakened, creative life.

Falak / Aasman
The sky, the heavens, the firmament (aflak = the celestial spheres).
Arsh
The Throne of God; the highest point of creation over which the Divine presides.
Wajd
Ecstasy; the rapture that overtakes the Sufi when the Divine touches the heart, often in sama.
Zikr
Remembrance of God through the repetition of His names or sacred formulas, aloud or silently.
Haal
A transient spiritual state granted to the seeker by grace, as opposed to a permanently earned station.
