How Iqbal uses it

Dard-e-dil is heartache — the ache lodged in the heart by love and longing, the tender wound the lover carries like a treasure. In the lyric this pain is not a thing to be cured but a sign of being truly alive to love. Iqbal honors the feeling heart over the merely clever one: a breast without this ache is, to him, barely a breast at all — sensitivity to pain is the mark of a living soul.
