How Iqbal uses it

Yaad is remembrance — the memory of the beloved that fills the parted lover's nights, keeping the absent face present in the heart. In separation, yaad is both wound and consolation: it reopens the longing and yet sustains the love across the distance. The ghazal lives much of its life in yaad, the lover companioned only by the recollection of a face he cannot see; in the sacred register, the remembrance (zikr) of the Beloved is the soul's whole occupation.
